Hello All,

I was able to make it to the October 7th Owl Woods Walk/Hike. Beautiful weather, great people, and several of our feathered friends.

This weekend I was able to schedule some time away from home and work to get down to the woods. I am glad that I was able to make it there as I was able to learn quite a bit about the spring Owl migration from Mike Frail, plantlife from Chris (sorry Chris I did not catch your last name) , and learned from Jim & Jean Barlow about the American Kestrel, Turkey Vulture, and Red Tailed Hawk.

The children that were on the hike this month had some really good questions. One of the young boys stopped on the trail, looked up and asked ' what is that ball hanging from the tree ' . I will tell you I have been in these woods quite a few times and never noticed it. Hanging from a branch was a weaver's nest, boy it is amazing what those birds can build. I took several photos of the nest, but pointing up I was having problems with the bright sky making the nest dark.

Mike Frail has put together a great program here in Owl Woods with his monthly Nature walk/hike. This program is very educational as Mike, and all the other volunteers, have taken the time to share their wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna that exists all around us. Once in a while everyone should take a bit of time, relax, and experience the natural world around us. There is a sense of tranquility when you take a moment, step back from the trials and tribulations of everyday life, and get out in nature to enjoy the quietness and serenity basically in our own 'backyard'.
